What vinyl chip epoxy flooring involves

A vinyl chip epoxy floor is a layered, fully bonded coating system — not a paint and not a peel-and-stick product. The slab is first diamond-ground with industrial equipment to open the concrete’s pores and remove old sealers, oil stains, and laitance. Any cracks, pits, or spalled areas are repaired with epoxy mortar so they don’t telegraph through the finish.

Next we roll a pigmented 100% solids epoxy basecoat. While the basecoat is still wet, we broadcast colored vinyl chips (sometimes called flakes) by hand across the entire surface to rejection — meaning we keep throwing chips until the floor can’t absorb any more. After cure, the excess is scraped and vacuumed, and we topcoat with one or two layers of clear high-build polyaspartic or polyurethane for chemical resistance, UV stability, and that deep, wet-look gloss.

The chips themselves come in dozens of color blends — from clean grays for a showroom look to earthy multi-tones that suit wine-country homes. Standard chip size is 1/4″, with larger 1″ chips available for a bolder pattern. The result is a floor that’s about 25–40 mils thick, seamless, and easy to mop.

Our vinyl chip epoxy process

1. On-site assessment. We walk the slab, check moisture, look at cracks and previous coatings, and talk through how you’ll use the space.
2. Color and chip selection. You pick a chip blend and base color from physical samples. We’ll show you what looks right under your lighting.
3. Diamond grinding and prep. We grind the concrete to a CSP-2/3 profile, vacuum-shrouded to keep dust down, and repair cracks and divots with epoxy mortar.
4. Epoxy basecoat. A pigmented 100% solids epoxy is rolled at the proper mil thickness.
5. Chip broadcast. While the base is wet, chips are hand-broadcast to full rejection across the entire surface.
6. Scrape, vacuum, topcoat. Excess chips are removed, the floor is scraped smooth, and one or two clear topcoats are applied.
7. Cure and walkthrough. Foot traffic in 24 hours, vehicle traffic in 3–5 days depending on system. We walk the finished floor with you before we leave.

What vinyl chip epoxy typically costs

Honest answer: estimates range based on square footage, slab condition, chip coverage, and topcoat choice. A clean two-car garage in good shape is on the lower end. A patio with cracks and old sealer, a three-car garage with oil staining, or a commercial space that needs to stay open during phased work will push the number up. The biggest cost drivers are how much prep the slab needs (oil contamination, old coatings, and cracks all add labor) and which topcoat you choose — polyaspartic costs more than polyurethane but cures faster and resists UV better.

What’s always included in our quotes: full mechanical grinding, crack repair, basecoat, chips to rejection, and at least one clear topcoat. How long does a vinyl chip epoxy floor last?
A properly prepped and installed chip system with a polyaspartic or polyurethane topcoat typically performs 15–20+ years in a residential garage. Commercial floors with heavy traffic may need a refresh topcoat sooner. The key word is “properly prepped” — coatings fail at the bond line, not in the epoxy itself.

Is vinyl chip epoxy better than garage floor paint?
Yes, by a wide margin. Latex or one-part epoxy “paints” from the hardware store are thin, water-based, and bond to a sealed slab poorly. A real chip system is 25–40 mils thick, mechanically bonded to ground concrete, and chemically resistant. Paint peels under hot tires; a chip floor doesn’t.

Will it hide cracks and stains in my old slab?
The chips do a remarkable job of camouflaging minor imperfections and future scuffs. Larger cracks are repaired during prep so they don’t show. We’ll be straight with you on-site about what your slab will and won’t hide.

Can vinyl chip epoxy go outside on a patio or pool deck?
Yes, with the right UV-stable topcoat. Standard epoxy ambers in sunlight, so for exterior patios and pool decks we use a polyaspartic or aliphatic urethane topcoat to keep the color true.

How do I clean and maintain it?
Sweep or dust-mop regularly, and damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. No harsh acids, no abrasive pads. That’s it — no waxing, no resealing for years.
