Understanding what it can and cannot do is the difference between spending wisely and spending twice.
What a Polymer-Modified Overlay Actually Is
A polymer-modified overlay is a cement-based topping blended with acrylic or other polymer resins, troweled or sprayed over an existing slab at thicknesses ranging from about 1/16 of an inch up to roughly 3/4 of an inch. The polymers give it flexural strength, bond aggressively to sound concrete, and resist the cracking that plagues traditional cement skim coats.
In practice, that means you can resurface a tired slab with something that behaves more like new concrete than like a coating. It can be left smooth, broom-finished, stamped to mimic flagstone or tile, or stained to match a wine-country aesthetic. It is a structural-cosmetic hybrid, which is exactly why it solves problems epoxy cannot.
Why Epoxy Cannot Fix a Damaged Surface
Epoxy is a coating, not a resurfacer. At a typical thickness of 10 to 40 mils, it conforms to whatever is underneath. If your slab has spalled patches, trowel ridges, divots from rebar pops, or a low spot that holds water, epoxy will telegraph every one of those flaws and sometimes make them more visible under a glossy finish.
