What polished concrete involves

Polished concrete is not a coating. It’s the slab itself, mechanically refined with progressively finer diamond tooling until it shines. The process starts with heavy metal-bond diamonds that flatten the surface and open the pores, followed by a lithium or sodium silicate densifier that chemically hardens the concrete from within. From there we move through resin-bond diamond pads in increasing grits – typically 100, 200, 400, 800, and up to 1500 or 3000 depending on the gloss level you want – finishing with a stain guard that resists oil and water penetration.

The result is a floor that reflects light beautifully, never needs waxing or recoating, and can last decades with basic cleaning. On existing Napa slabs we can go with a cream polish (minimal aggregate exposure), a salt-and-pepper finish (light aggregate), or a full aggregate exposure that shows the stone throughout the mix. Color can be added through penetrating stains before the final polishing passes, so the tint becomes part of the concrete rather than a layer on top.

Our polished concrete process

1. Site visit and slab evaluation. We check hardness, flatness, existing coatings, cracks, and moisture. Not every slab is a good polishing candidate, and we’ll tell you honestly.
2. Written estimate and finish selection. You pick aggregate exposure (cream, salt-and-pepper, or full), gloss level, and any stain color.
3. Surface prep. We remove existing floor coverings, mastics, or coatings and repair cracks and spalls with color-matched semi-rigid filler.
4. Initial grinding. Metal-bond diamonds flatten and open the slab to your chosen aggregate exposure.
5. Densification. Lithium silicate densifier is applied and worked in, chemically hardening the concrete.
6. Progressive polishing. Resin-bond diamonds through the grit sequence bring the slab up to the target sheen.
7. Stain guard and walk-through. We apply a penetrating stain guard, walk the floor with you, and go over care instructions.

What polished concrete typically costs

Polished concrete pricing is driven by four things: square footage, slab condition, level of aggregate exposure, and final gloss. A clean, flat 1,000 sq ft slab getting a cream polish is a very different job than a 5,000 sq ft warehouse floor with old mastic and hairline cracks that needs full aggregate exposure and a high-gloss finish. Removing existing tile, VCT, or carpet glue also adds prep time. On the other hand, larger continuous areas usually bring the per-square-foot cost down because our grinders can run efficiently.

FAQ

How long does polished concrete last?
A properly densified and polished floor can last the life of the slab – decades. Unlike coatings, there’s no film to wear through. Periodic re-polishing of the top grits every 7-10 years in high-traffic commercial spaces will keep the gloss looking new.

Polished concrete vs epoxy – which is better?
Neither is universally better. Polished concrete is the slab itself, so it can’t peel or delaminate, and it’s ideal for wineries, showrooms, and modern homes that want a natural stone-like look. Epoxy (including our vinyl chip systems) is better for garages, workshops, and any slab with chemical exposure or significant surface damage that needs to be hidden.

Can you polish an old, stained, or cracked Napa slab?
Often yes. Grinding removes surface stains and old coatings, and we fill cracks with color-matched semi-rigid filler that polishes along with the concrete. Deeply damaged or very soft slabs may be better candidates for a polymer overlay first, then polishing on top.

Is polished concrete slippery?
When dry, a polished floor has similar slip resistance to polished stone or tile. For wet areas we can add a slip-resistant additive to the stain guard.

How long does the job take?
Most residential and small commercial polished concrete jobs take 2-4 days. Larger winery or warehouse floors run longer. You can typically walk on the floor the same day we finish.

Does polished concrete need to be sealed or waxed?
No wax, ever. The stain guard we apply is the only maintenance product needed, and typical care is just dust mopping and occasional damp mopping with a neutral pH cleaner.
