Is Your Garage Floor Ready for Summer? What Epoxy Coating Requires Before You Start

June is prime season for epoxy garage floor coating in the North Bay. Here’s what your slab needs to pass before the first coat goes down.

By the time June settles over the North Bay, garages have dried out from the winter rains and daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the range epoxy needs to cure properly. It is the best window of the year to coat a garage floor — but only if the slab underneath is actually ready. A good epoxy system can last fifteen to twenty years. A rushed prep job can fail in one.

Why Timing Matters in the North Bay

Epoxy is a chemical reaction. Most residential systems want an ambient temperature between 55°F and 85°F during application and the first 24 hours of cure, with relative humidity ideally under 75 percent. From Vallejo up through Napa and Santa Rosa, June and early July hit that window almost every day. The slab itself has also had months to release any moisture it absorbed during the wet season.

Applying epoxy outside those conditions is where most homeowner-grade failures start. Coatings applied in February over a damp slab can blister by April. Coatings applied during a September heat spike can flash-cure and leave roller marks that never level out.

The Moisture Test That Decides Everything

Concrete looks dry long before it actually is. A slab that feels bone-dry to the touch can still be pushing vapor up from the soil beneath it, and that vapor is what lifts epoxy off the surface in sheets months later. Before we quote a coating job, we test.

The simplest field check is the ASTM D4263 plastic sheet test: an 18-inch square of plastic taped down on all four sides for 16 to 24 hours. If condensation forms underneath, the slab is not ready. For a more precise reading, we use calcium chloride tests or in-situ relative humidity probes that measure moisture vapor emission in pounds per 1,000 square feet over 24 hours. Most epoxy manufacturers cap acceptable readings at 3 to 5 pounds. Above that, you need a moisture-mitigating primer or a different system entirely.

Reading the Cracks

Every garage slab in the Bay Area has cracks. The question is which ones matter. Hairline shrinkage cracks — the spidery surface lines most slabs develop in their first few years — can usually be cleaned, filled with a flexible polyurea or epoxy crack filler, and coated over without issue.

Active structural cracks are different. If you can feel a lip with your fingernail where one side has settled lower than the other, or if a crack runs the full width of the slab and opens and closes seasonally, the coating will telegraph that movement and split along the same line. These cracks need to be chased out, filled with a semi-rigid joint filler, and in some cases bridged with a fabric-reinforced base coat before any decorative work begins.

What Surface Prep Actually Looks Like

This is the step homeowners are most often surprised by. Etching a garage floor with citric acid from the hardware store is not surface preparation — it is a rinse. Proper prep for an epoxy garage floor coating in the North Bay means mechanical profiling: either diamond grinding or shot blasting the slab to a CSP (Concrete Surface Profile) of 2 to 3, roughly the texture of 60-grit sandpaper.

That profile is what gives the epoxy something to lock into. Without it, you are essentially gluing plastic to polished stone. We run HEPA-filtered grinders so the dust stays out of the rest of the house, and we follow up with a vacuum pass before any primer goes down.

Oil Stains, Rust, and Old Coatings

Our experienced team has been coating floors across Solano, Napa, and Sonoma counties and has taught us that the contamination you can see is usually less of a problem than the contamination you cannot. Oil that has soaked into the slab will keep wicking up through fresh epoxy unless it is degreased, often more than once, and then mechanically removed during grinding.

Old paint or a previous DIY epoxy kit complicates things further. Sometimes the existing coating is sound enough to abrade and recoat over. More often it has to come off entirely, because the new system will only be as strong as whatever is underneath it. We test adhesion on a small area before committing to either approach.

What to Expect on Installation Day

A properly prepped two-car garage typically takes two to three days from start to walk-on. Day one is grind, repair, and prime. Day two is the base coat and decorative media — vinyl chip, quartz, or metallic pigment, depending on the system. Day three is the clear topcoat, usually a polyaspartic for its UV stability and abrasion resistance. Vehicle traffic returns after about 72 hours of cure.

Plan to keep the garage cleared and the door accessible. We will need power and water on site, and we ask homeowners to keep pets and kids out of the work area until the final coat has set.
